About This Racket

In 1982 Martina Navratilove switched from the wooden Carbonex 2 to the new Yonex R-7 (midsize graphite composite). It helped, she won Wimbledon! Martina used this Carbonex then the R-7 then the R22 composite. Yonex only just were known via their first big success came with Tony Roche who was with Chemold (1971-74) or so……….but in 1975 switched to Yonex OPS. He used Yonex at Wimbledon and New York. Also in 1975 Wimbledon doubles winner Ann Kiyomura used a Yonex and finally in 1980 Billie Jean King (USA), Martina Navratilova (USA) and Dianne Fromholtz (Australia) all sign on with yonex.

Yonnex made a lot of rackets in the R series with a signature “squared off” head shape. They were called REXPLAY and REXKING. Most poplar likely the R-7 at around 98 sq” 18.5 mm box beam, 16×19 pattern. Others R-1, R-4, R-5,R-7 , R-18, R-22, R-23, R-32 , R-50, and the R-271. They were consider peculiarly large head sizes in 1981 and prices at £50.
