Rawlings Sporting Goods is an American sports equipment manufacturing company based in Maryland Heights St Louis, Missouri. Founded in 1887, Rawlings currently specializes in baseball and softball clothing and equipment. The Rawlings company was acquired in 2018 for $395 million. created the 1970 Rawlings Tennis Classic. They made only a small foothold into tennis through sponsorship of John Newcombe. The brand was moderately popular in the US with about 10 models but hardly seen in the UK and Europe.Their main success might have been when in 1973 they made a steel racket, the Rawlings Tiebreaker used in the Australian Open. John Newcombe was an Australian former professional tennis player. Born 1949, he is a nine-time Grand Slam champion and was a key player in Australia’s dominance of men’s tennis in the 1960s and early 1970s. Newcombe won 107 singles titles, including seven Grand Slam singles championships, and 120 doubles titles. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1989 and was named the Australian Institute of Sport’s Australian Athlete of the Century in 1999. Newcombe has also worked as a tennis coach and commentator.
